Siesta Summer Study

Posted by nikandre on Jun 13, 2009 in siesta summer study

Welcome, Siestas! The summer study officially launches on Tuesday, June 23. In case you missed it on The LPM Blog, here is the schedule:

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 (1st Mini-Session/LAUNCH/Group Instructions)

(DO WEEKS ONE AND TWO OF HOMEWORK ON YOUR OWN.)

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 (2nd Mini-Session/Group Instructions)

(DO WEEKS THREE AND FOUR OF HOMEWORK ON YOUR OWN.)

Tuesday, July 21, 2009 (3rd Mini-Session/Group Instructions)

(DO WEEKS FIVE AND SIX OF HOMEWORK ON YOUR OWN.)

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 (4th Mini-Session/Conclusion)

I read a few of the other blogs hosting this study and am borrowing their ideas as to how this should work for us:

On each of the Tuesdays listed above, Beth will post her video on her blog, usually first thing in the morning.  I will try to be ready to go each of those Tuesdays and watch it as soon as it’s available, but with three small children I can only promise to watch it as soon as I possibly can.  After I’ve watched the video, I will start a blog post for that session, including whatever Beth asks us to discuss.  Once my post is up (and after you’ve watched the video for yourself), jump in to the conversation by posting a comment.  Then check back over the next few days to see what others are posting, and add more to the discussion as you see fit.  This will obviously get stretched out over a longer period time in this format than it would in face to face meetings, but I think it will still resemble the feel of being together in the same place. And of course the benefits of being able to refer back to what others have said and do this anytime it works for you are huge!  There might be two of us or twenty of us, but it should be fun.

In the meantime, you need to do just a couple of things:

1. If you have not already done so, please order your book: Me, Myself & Lies.

2. Beth wants to have pictures of the small groups participating in the Summer Study, so please send me a picture  by June 20 so that I can put them all together.  You can e-mail it to nikandre@yahoo.com and please put Siesta Pics in the subject line.

3. Reply to this post so we all know you’re here. You can put up a comment by clicking on the little post-it note with a number at the top of a post, then heading down to the bottom of the page and filling in the form.  Reply with your name and a little info about yourself, as much or as little as you want to share, but at least your name and location.   And of course it can only help the group feel more like real life if you share more than that!  Feel free to ask questions too.

On the Occasion of my 35th Birthday

Posted by nikandre on Jun 7, 2009 in varia

The Husband took The Kids to visit family this weekend so as to give me my first time home alone in two years.  Feeling all old and contemplative, so we’ll see where this ends up. Forgive me if I ramble . . .

What is it about the 0 and 5 birthdays that makes them seem so much more remarkable? Perhaps it’s because one is officially the start of a new decade and one is the halfway mark, but they always feel so much older to me somehow. 35 is no exception. Something about it seems so undeniably grown up, and, while I’m not so sure I like that very much, it is what it is. Here’s hoping and praying I have the opportunity to feel old for a lot more years!

Having this weekend alone has given me a great deal of time for reflection, which was, of course, the plan. This has been quite a year, and really it’s all rooted in stuff that goes back for years and years. But this year was the culmination of a lot and while it ain’t over yet already it’s not one I’d care to repeat. Ever. Without going into too many details (For that you’ll need to read the book in a few years. Seriously. It’s been given an awesome title and everything.), I’ll say that the issues have ranged widely. From the death of our sometimes annoying but sweet and dearly-loved dog (I picked up her ashes just yesterday–so hard.) to beginning the real healing of some deep, deep wounds that have existed for 20 and in some cases more than 30 years to the daily struggles of life with my three incredibly spirited and therefore high maintenance children, I have been slogging through it all. And I am happy to report that, while the work is far from over, I honestly believe the worst of it is behind me.

Mommy’s Back!

Posted by nikandre on Jun 6, 2009 in varia

OK, OK, so it’s been an exceptionally long time since I’ve posted anything to this blog, and my readership has all but disappeared. Yeah, well, been a little busy what with baby #3, the other two monkeys, a little hobby of visiting the ER and finally having surgery and all sorts of other junk in my life. In any case, I’m back, so off we go! Expect to see some changes around here. For one thing, I’ve deleted all that came before, as what’s past is past, and I’m all about starting over right now. Below, however, I include the first ever Mommy’s on the Edge post from October 16, 2005, to remind us how this little corner of the web got its name and was started in the first place.

So as not to clog up our family site with my ramblings on my faith, motherhood, politics, sports and whatever else comes to me on any given day, I’ve decided to enter the world of a true blog. This will be my corner of the web to share my personal opinions, stream of consciousness musings, bizarre sense of humor and anything else I feel like sharing in my spare time. You are under no obligation to read any of it, so if you disagree, or if I’ve offended you or otherwise bother you, simply don’t read it. Or do. This blog is for my own therapy more than anything, so I’m fine either way.  That said, I hope you do stick around!

In case you’re wondering, by the way, The Girl unwittingly gave this blog its name. The Silly Song on A Snoodle’s Tale is entitled “Sport Utility Vehicle” and features Larry and a woman he meets at the gas station while each fills up an SUV. They sing of the virtues of their chosen gas guzzlers while dancing around on the hoods and so on. The Girl refers to Larry’s female counterpart as Mommy and says, “Mommy’s on the edge!” every time she dances close to the edge of the hood of her SUV. For what I should think are obvious reasons, this little phrase struck a chord with me in ways The Girl never intended. Hence the name. And there you have it.
